It enounces of an old black woman and the struggles shes had to deal with end-to-end her life. The author names the woman Phoenix after a mythological bird that died and then came back to life through its ashes which organises it immortal. The author bring ups the woman immortal because she continues to have something to live for, her grandson, whom she obviously considers her biggest gift.

The author never says exactly how often the woman makes the journey, hitherto we know shes made it before because the attendants knew who she was when she came in the building. It is a very long trip because the hunter even tell that he only goes into town when he is sick, and tells Phoenix to go home.
